Shu’mata means “Paradise” in Maa, the Maasai language. Located to the north of Mount Meru in north-eastern Tanzania, West Kilimanjaro is a concession south of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. Wild, unspoilt and often overlooked in a clamour for the peak, this extraordinary destination is a wonderful place for private game viewing, hiking, night drives, horse safaris, and more. Vast stretches of savannah dotted with acacia woodland and wild bush are home to large numbers of elephants, as well as wildebeest, buffalo, gerenuk, warthog, zebra, giraffe, lesser kudus, and shy predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, hyenas, and jackals. Abundant birdlife adds appeal – spot tawny eagles, Maasai ostrich, and more. The ancient Maasai tribe lives here with their cattle among the wildlife and allows visitors to stay with them and learn about their unique culture.

Overnight: Shu’Mata Camp
Situated directly under the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, this luxurious and rugged retreat is one of the best ways to experience the allure of Africa. A permanent camp comprised of a handful of Hemingway style tents, the installation is situated on a hill in the Maasai tribal lands in Amboselli National Park. A stunning landscape of contrasts and stark beauty, the tents were designed and positioned to capture it all with 360 degree views of the savannah and Kilimanjaro. Positioned in a line along the ridge, there are a total of seven tents that form the unique and adventurous compound.
A great homage to the legendary 1920s safari spirit, this is a passionate venture that incorporates the design talents of local artists and villagers and was inspired by the history and the owners’ love of Africa. Each of the seven tents is self-contained and include a shower, toilet, basin and private veranda with room for four. With a sophisticated approach to a traditional safari camp, the interiors and decor have all been designed as a tribute to the bygone era and are chic and colourful.
The kitchen serves freshly prepared international cuisine at an elegant dining table or on the terrace with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro.

During the short rainy season in November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June they return up north. As the migration is completely dependent on the yearly rainfalls, the location of the herds may vary from one year to another although, your guide will know where to locate the animals and where to see them best.
